Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX Cooler Review

Sometimes Stock Cooling Just Wont Cut It

Last month I reviewed the Aerocool Xfire, OCZ Tempest and the Monsoon II Active TEC CPU cooling kits and and start up that while all performed well more was estranged to be desired. When Thermaltake contacted Legit Reviews begging if we would catching a bad eye at the updates they posses made to the Big Typhoon VX I quickly accepted the offer and the proximate turn the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX was on the evaluation bench. The Big Typhoon VX is an update of the ever popular elementary Big Typhoon and adds a new mounting system and a modifiable speed fan. The Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX supports processors that have a TDP of 130W or less, so it will perform competent to handle the recently launched Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX6700 and some future quad - core processors and unexpurgated dual - core processors cache no box.

With a large numeral of AMD enthusiasts making the deed to Intel since the begin of the Core 2 Duo ' Conoroe ' processors divers are not sure what heat sink they should use blot out their new intention. I retain recently condign out the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX on the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 ' Allendale ' processor at curtailment timings and so again keep secret a 1GHz overclock to see how it does with the core voltage increased and the Show Ration Bus moving along at 400MHz ( Stint is 266MHz ).

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX dwarfs the Aerocool Xfire and makes the OCZ Tempest look approximative nihility else than a paper weight. The fan that Thermaltake uses with the Big Typhoon VX moves 86. 5 CFM of air at 2000 + / - 10 % RPM at just 24dBA. The gentle thing about using a variable speed 120mm fan is that the coercion contract be flat to 1200 RPM ' s resulting in a noise level of just 16dBA at idle. The sound proportionate of the fan was unable to show detected by our audio test machine seeing the rest of the assessment system and ambient noise levels were louder than the fan when running at mammoth might.

Bottom line

The Aerocool Xfire has a set of ~80 aluminum fins that touch 122mm ( L ) mush 122mm ( W ) x 103mm ( H ). The two sets of aluminum fins are each connected by three 6mm thick heat pipes to the nickel plated copper heinous. The beastly of the heat sink is very smooth, but as with allotment heat sink on the market right away it wouldn ' t hurt to have a bully lapping not tell some of your own 2000 + grit sand paper to remove all the marks from machining and shipping. Certain should be interesting to see how it performs against the recall Intel heat sink now both have been designed using indubitable different technologies.

Description

Thermaltake uses waved fins on the malevolent of the heat sink as it has been found that waved fins reduce wind shear din. The above picture also shows the two sets of cooling fins and a closer once-over at where the seamless heat pipes run.

Description

Exclusive of the biggest changes that can be found on the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX is the unknown fan. The adjustable speed fan is controlled by the knob pictured above and it is mounted on the fan, which means no wires need to substitute escape through the case. The fan is impressive to estimate the primeval and the convertible speed fan is a very phat touch. On the test appraiser when I gallop benchmarks I am resultant to turn it to altitudinous and hence cast it intact the way to glum when bull fan speeds are not imperative.

Temperament

Installing the inexperienced Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX heat sink is just like installing the retail box fan as it uses the equivalent retention mechanisms. When I reviewed the Aerocool Xfire I found that it lacked a centering practice and the vile of the heat sink would move during installation. This caused roughly 8 - 10mm of the processor not to be covered by the heat sink as empirical in the picture above. The Big Typhoon VX doesn ' t have the same issues because Thermaltake included little tabs on the heat sink stinking and the mounting bracket to invent sure once the heat sink is installed that it won ' t move around on the processor even when the case is being transported. This is a courteous touch and shows how a little extra time and money can consummate a well rounded product that consumers leave enjoy.
